Sagging headliner
The headliner is sagging in a couple of areas on our boat. The most noticeable was in the aft cabin, so that is what we tackled first.
Steering mechanism
This areas is normally separated from the aft cabin by a wooden cover. You can see that the headliner had fallen as was resting on top of the steering cables, which can't be good. This was a relatively recent development due to a leak in the deck where the cables going to the chartplotter on the pedestal enter the cabin. We fixed the leak while installing a new chartplotter
Another view
The wires are normally bundled and behind the wooden cover.
mess
A drop cloth was used to catch the dust caused by the old foam. Glasses were also necessary to keep it out of our eyes.
Results
Its far from perfect, but a huge improvement. The whole thing only took a couple of hours, so it was worth it even if we end up redoing it in the future. It was pretty miserable work with the fumes and foam dust, but there wasn't anything difficult about it. Next targets for healiner repair are the head and hanging lockers.** UPDATE **
The headliner has sagged again, within a month or so of the work described above... I believe the adhesive didn't stick because of all the loose and dried-out foam on the back of the liner. I think next time we will have to make a greater effor to remove the dried-out backing, or replace the headliner with new material.
